Hey Bud, this is an old thread but you kinda left us hanging. What was the final outcome of your prop job? What numbers do you get? What pitch did you end up with.
Have you been happy with your performance since the prop overhaul?
What sort of cruise performance do you get?
Thanks!

I had a chance to fly today and the climb performance is greatly improved, about 600 FPM
and I saw very close to 2500 RPM on climb out that's about the 100 RPM increase the mechanic said I needed.
Can't respond to exactly what it was pitched to yet but I believe it was 48 before, don't know the
diameter as I wasn't smart enough to measure it but will check. Do not believe it was shortened any.

A 48 is already a climb prop. A 46 is extreme climb, a 47 or 48 is a climb prop, a 49 is a mild climb (that's what I have) and a 50 is standard. Beyond that are various flavors of cruise prop.
Do you know the length of the prop? The permitted range for a McCauley prop on a C-85 is quite narrow, 69.5 to 71 inches. Mine is a 71-49.

Thanks for the reply. My prop was taken off and sent to prop shop. It should have come back yesterday,
after installation mechanic is going to check static RPM and test fly to check performance. He did not mention
that it would be shortened only repitched.. Static RPM was about 100 RPM low so pitch was to be flattened.
It was 48 not sure what the mechanic and prop shop came up with but know there was a discussion between them
and they know I'm looking for better climb performance and willing to give up some cruise. I would be very happy
with the performance that you ended up getting. Crummy weather here now and Thanksgiving coming up so don't
know if he will get to it right away, they seem to be busy all the time.

Check and be sure your prop was shortened and repitched. I repitched mine to a 71/48 when I converted it according to the Continental service bulletin 47-16 be sure the carb was modified and has the correct number and the correct size venturi and jet. the carb number should be stamped on the side of the carb flange. Check your static rpm for a c85. I now get between 500-600 fpm from a grass strip in the mountains 1400 ft. even on days with a density altitude of 3500 it still climbs good and I only lost about 4-5 mph cruise. I would rather get over a tree than hit it going 5 MPH faster. It made alot of difeerence in the performance for my airplane

Sorry it took so long for a reply but had to get scheduled with a busy mechanic.
So the problem seems to be the prop. RPM about one hundred revs too low.
The prop is supposed to be taken off tomorrow and sent in to be re pitched.
Hopefully this will result in the increase in performance I'm looking for. Possible
lower cruise speed but improved clime performance. I'll post the results. Thanks for
