Hey Bruce: The Electrol strut (if it has not been modified) will have a pin & spring arrangement at the top that holds the inner working portion of the cylinder together. The Steel strut utilized 4 screws to hold the inner working parts. These screws were only accessible after taking out the outer 4 screws.

nose gear strut confusion was created by Bruce Bennett
There are two types of struts. Electrol and steel.
Electrol is always capitalized implying it is a brand
name. Steel is rarely capitalized implying the strut
is made out of steel. What is the scoop and how can
I tell them apart visually (Ercoupe.info didn't help).
