Contact the EAA, they have all the info on that for antiques and Warbirds. If you are recreating a original paint scheme, it is allowed.

I did find one FAA document about antique/classic aircraft "being allowed" to use NC instead of N. I'd like to go back to original as I can on Tweety. FAR Part 45.22 is a bit confusing however but I do see current photos of aircraft with "NC" registration numbers all over the web like Airliners.net. And if allowed what paperwork needs to be done?
