A licensed prop shop can cut it down and even change the pitch if you want

Larry, can the prop be trimmed to a 70” by a prop shop and be OK with FAA Regs.

A 73" prop is legal only on the C-75. It is illegal to put that prop on a C-85. If you read the type certificate A-718 you will see that for the 85 horse engine the legal length for a McCauley prop is 69 ½ to 71 inches. The longer prop actually steals your horsepower - remember, hp comes from rpm, and a long prop is intended to spin more slowly with more torque.

Larry, it appears I have a McCauly CM7346 the standard prop for a 75hp. That means I have longer prop than your recommended size. I would think 46 would be a climb prop. What would you suggest I do?

Ken, Sorry for leaving you hanging. I'm definitely satisfied with the improved performance in the climb, lost about 3to4 mph in cruise but that's ok with me. I don't have actual numbers in my head but will pay more attention the next time I fly. Right now a small wiring issue has turned into close to a complete panel rewiring job so I'm down for awhile.
