AOPA has been talking about that alot the past 2 months and did an article about it and flew 4 test airplanes. My advice, DON'T DO IT. Go over to YOUTUBE and watch Dan Gryder's "PROBABLE CAUSE" vlog about the impossible turn. He really blasts AOPA'S McSpadden and their testing and article conclusions.
AOPA really got this one wrong.

180 turns you around to face the airfield but located parallel to the departure runway -- you still need to turn toward your departure path (45 degrees likely) and THEN turn toward the runway centerline (another 45 degrees) in order to land on the pavement. Incidentally, landing anywhere soft and unobstructed on the airfield is fine, you don't necessarily have to be ON the pavement. Depends on trees, buildings, and so on. JPT

Why 270 degrees? I thought 180 degrees would put one back on the same runway.

ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THE IMPOSSIBLE TURN? was created by John Trowbridge
The EAA has an excellent webinar -- www.eaa.org/videos/6193816644001-- that reviews a promising program that is developing a "Takeoff Advisor" to help pilots make informed decisions on turning back or pressing on forward to the softest landing available. Has anyone participated in this program? Has anyone had experience in actual turning back to runway? Does anyone have "good data" on altitude loss in turning back 270 degrees (to make to runway environment) -- details please! Stall with loss of control/crash can be terribly fatal ..... and Ercoupes CAN stall. Could we get a fruitful discussion going on this point? Thanks!
